The new Mäpuru Homeland Learning Centre

Population: 60 to 100

Location: 60 km South of Elcho Island, on the mainland.

Building: The Mäpuru Homeland Learning Centre building was constructed in 1995; NT DEET funded the materials and made a contribution to the labour and Marthakal Homeland Resource Centre constructed and paid the remainder of the construction cost.

Comments: For over 6 years since Mäpuru residents have expressed their need for a teacher to be permanently based in Mäpuru. Promises by the Minister Syd Stirling (2003) for toilets and teacher accomodation did not come to fruition.

Notes: Large Homeland with well maintained generator, reticulated power and water, small gardens, industrous residents who weave and spin products for sale, potential for eco tourism. A Cooperative has been successfully operating with minimal assistance through the school for two and a half years.
